Kazakhstan - Is officially known as the Republic of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is an Asian Country and is completely surrounded by other countries, although it does have borders along the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan shares with Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and China. Kazakhstan declared it's independence on December 16, 1991, the last Soviet republic to do so. Kazakhstan has a rich history dating back to the nomads. Economic growth has been stable in the last five years, at a rate higher than 9%. Current problems include: developing a strong national identity; expanding the development of the country's vast energy resources and exporting them to world markets; achieving a sustainable economic growth; diversifying the economy outside the oil, gas, and mining sectors; enhancing Kazakhstan's competitiveness; and strengthening relations with neighboring states and other foreign powers. Outside of radioactive and toxic chemical sites associated with former defense industries and test ranges scattered throughout the country this is a wonderful country to visit.
