Pakistan
Pakistan - Is officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Pakistan is an Asian Country and shares borders with Afghanistan, Iran, India, China, and the Arabian Sea. On 18 February 2008, Pakistan held its general elections. The Pakistan Peoples Party won the majority of the votes and formed an alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League. They nominated and elected Yousaf Raza Gilani as Prime Minister of Pakistan. On 18 August 2008, Pervez Musharraf resigned as President of Pakistan amidst increasing calls for his impeachment. In the presidential election that followed, Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan People's Party won by a landslide majority and became President of Pakistan. The British came to dominate the region in the 18th century. The separation in 1947 of British India into the Muslim state of Pakistan was never satisfactorily resolved. Tensions today between India and Pakistan are now settling down after years of discontent and 3 wars. Pakistan, an impoverished and underdeveloped country, has suffered from decades of internal political disputes, low levels of foreign investment, and a costly, ongoing confrontation with neighboring India. However, since 2001, IMF-approved reforms - most notably, privatization of the banking sector - bolstered by generous foreign assistance and renewed access to global markets, have generated macroeconomic recovery.
