Palau
Palau - Is officially known as the Republic of Palau. Palau is an Asian island nation in the Pacific Ocean, east of the Philippines. Emerging from United Nations trusteeship in 1994, it is one of the youngest and smallest nations. A Compact of Free Association with the US was approved in 1986, but not ratified until 1993. It entered into force the following year, when the islands gained independence. Under the Compact, the US remains responsible for Palau's defense for 50 years, and Palauans are allowed to serve in the US military without having to possess permanent residency in the US. Palau is a sovereign nation and conducts its own foreign relations. The economy consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. The government is the major employer of the work force relying heavily on financial assistance from the US.
