Yemen

Yemen- Is officially known as the Republic of Yemen. Yemen is an Asian Country and shares borders with Oman, Saudi Arabia, the Arabian Sea the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The British had formed a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century and in 1967 withdrew from what became South Yemen. North and south Yemen were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. Since then Saudi Arabia and Yemen have agreed to a delimitation of their border. Its economic fortunes depend mostly on declining oil resources, but the country is trying to diversify its earnings. Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Arab world. Yemen faces even greater economical issues with the increased arrivals of Somalian refugees. Foreign language in public schools is taught from grade seven on, though the quality of public school instruction is low. Private schools using a British or American system teach English and produce proficient speakers, but Arabic is the dominant language of communication.
