Burma (Myanmar) - Is now officially known as the Union of Myanmar. Burma (Myanmar) is an Asian Country and shares borders with China, Laos, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, and the Bay of Bengal. Burma has 1,930 kilometres of coastline. The renaming proved to be politically controversial on several grounds. Opposition groups continue to use the name "Burma", since they do not recognize the legitimacy of the ruling military government nor its authority to rename the country in English. Burma is still struggling to mend its ethnic tensions. The Mon people are thought to be the earliest group to migrate into the lower Ayeyarwady valley, and by the mid-900s BC were dominant in southern Burma. The Mons became one of the first in South East Asia to embrace Theravada Buddhism.
