Iran is home to one of the world's oldest continuous major civilizations, many pre-historic sites across the Iranian plateau tell us of existence of ancient cultures with historical and urban settlements dating back to 4000 BC, centuries before the earliest civilizations arose in nearby Mesopotamia. Iran is also the 18th largest country in terms of area and is home to over seventy million.
