Iraq - Is officially known as the Republic of Iraq. Iraq is an Asian Country and shares borders with Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, and has a very narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (35 miles) on the Persian Gulf. Iraq was the world's fifth most unstable country, after Sudan, and the United States in 2007 referred to it in court proceedings as "an active theater of combat." Iraq is developing a parliamentary democracy. Iraq was historically known as Mesopotamia. It was home to the world's first known civilization, the Sumerian culture, followed by the Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian cultures, whose influence extended into neighboring regions as early as 5000 BC. Rich in history and in oil Iraq will one day return as a great nation filled with prosperity, hope and peace.
