Israel - Is officially known as the State of Israel. Israel is an Asian Country and shares borders with Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea, the West Bank and Gaza Strip are also adjacent. The majority of the Israeli population of about 7.28 million are Jews, it is the world's only Jewish state. The Land of Israel, has been sacred to the Jewish people since Biblical times. According to the Torah, the Land of Israel was promised to the three Patriarchs of the Jewish people, by God, as their homeland. On May 14, 1948, the day before the end of the British Mandate, the Jewish Agency proclaimed independence, naming the country Israel. The following day five Arab countries – Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq –invaded Israel. Jordan annexed what became known as the West Bank, and Egypt took control of the Gaza Strip. Despite its small size, Israel is home to a variety of geographic features, from the Negev desert in the south to the mountain ranges of the Galilee, Carmel, and the Golan in the north. The Israeli Coastal Plain on the shores of the Mediterranean is home to seventy percent of the nation's population.
