Singapore - Is officially known as the Republic of Singapore. Singapore is an Asian Country and is located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Bordering Malaysia by the Johore Strait and Indonesia by way of the Singapore Strait. Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. Since independence, Singapore's standard of living has been on the rise. Foreign direct investment and a state-led drive to industrialisation have created a modern economy focused on industry, education and urban planning. Singapore is the 5th wealthiest country in the world in terms of Gross Domestic Product per capita, equal to that of the four largest West European countries. The first records of settlement in Singapore are from the 2nd century AD. Transforming from the small Malay fishing village Singapore has become Singapore has a highly developed and successful free-market economy. The downside was by an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, which curbed tourism and consumer spending.
