Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka - Is officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is an Asian island country, located about 31 kilometres (19.3 mi) off the southern coast of India. Sri Lanka is bordered by the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, The Gulf of Mannar and Palk bay which separates it from India. The island was ceded to the British in 1796, became a crown colony in 1802, and was united under British rule by 1815. As Ceylon, it became independent in 1948; its name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972. Paleolithic human settlements have been discovered at excavations in several cave sites in the Western Plains region and the South-western face of the Central Hills region dating back late in the 6th century B.C. Although suffering a brutal civil war that began in 1983, Sri Lanka saw Gross Domestic Product growth average 4.5% in the last 10 years with the exception of a recession in 2001. Currently, Sri Lanka has a more statist economic approach, which seeks to reduce poverty by steering investment to disadvantaged areas, developing small and medium enterprises, promoting agriculture, and expanding the already enormous civil service. Sri Lanka chief revenue comes from food processing, textiles and apparel, food and beverages, port construction, telecommunications, and insurance and banking.
