Syria

Syria - Is officially known as the Syrian Arab Republic. Syria was formerly a French mandate and attained independence in 1946. Syria is an Asian Country and shares borders with Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. Syria has a rich history, around the excavated city of Ebla a great Semitic empire spread from the Red Sea north to Turkey and east to Mesopotamia from 2500 to 2400 BC. Ebla appears to have been founded around 3000 BC, and gradually built its empire through trade with the cities of Sumer and Akkad, as well as with peoples to the northwest. Syria is a middle-income, with an economy based on agriculture, oil, industry, and tourism. The Syrian economy grew by an estimated 3.3% in real terms in 2007 led by the petroleum and agricultural sectors, which together account for about one-half of Gross Domestic Product. The government hopes to attract new investment in the tourism, natural gas, and service sectors to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil and agriculture.
